Tracing Footsteps: A Singapore Peranakan Family
VIEW EVENT DETAILSA Zoom Lecture Series on Cultural Hybridity and Peranakan Culture
The early Chinese Diaspora encompassed communities across countries of Southeast Asia, including both Philippines and Singapore, and its legacy still impacts these nations. The Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese who formed hybrid communities in the Malay archipelago. Experience this history through the story of Peranakan Scholar Mr. Peter Lee’s family, from the time his ancestors journeyed from Southern China in the 18th century to when it placed down roots in Singapore, and the amorphous, evolving and fluid aspects of being Peranakan, which might also uncover the true nature of Singapore identity.
This is the first of two online lectures brought to you by Asia Society Philippines and Singapore Tourism Board.
