This Saturday, January 22, Asia Society welcomes Pakistani-born guitarist Rez Abbasi's sextet Invocation, a group that interprets traditional music from Southern India and other areas of South Asia through a jazz idiom. Invocation also features the acclaimed pianist Vijay Iyer and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, who along with Abbasi are recognized as leading pioneers of South Asian-inspired modern jazz music. The trio will be joined by Johannes Weidenmueller on bass, Dan Weiss on drums, and Elizabeth Means on cello.
Rez Abbasi dropped by Asia Society this week to demonstrate how he fuses jazz and South Asian musical styles. Watch the clip above!
Rez Abbasi and Invocation will be performing at 8 PM on Saturday, Jan. 23. To buy tickets to the event click here.
