Myanmar Investment Forum
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAfter decades of isolation, Myanmar is in the midst of a transformation. While nearly 50 years of military rule stunted the country’s economic development, Myanmar is three years into a transition, attempting to reform its internal politics and economy and international persona. There are myriad challenges in Myanmar’s path—redefining its military’s role, firmly establishing rule of law, advancing ethnic equality and religious tolerance, rooting out corruption, creating jobs, and more—but there are also various opportunities ahead. Progress in political reform has paved the way for the easing of Western sanctions. This, coupled with economic reforms beginning to address foreign investment and financial sector laws and practices, has made Myanmar a burgeoning area for investment.
The Myanmar Investment and Tourism Forum, in which the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) is a partner, brings government officials and business leaders from Myanmar and the United States together to discuss issues in Myanmar’s economic development, such as FDI, the financial system, infrastructure, energy, and sustainability.
Speakers include Myanmar’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Development H.E. U Soe Thane, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Set Aung, Chairman of SPA Group Serge Pun, Myanmar’s Ministers of Energy and Tourism, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Charles Rivkin, and philanthropist George Soros, among many others.
