Taiwan to Sign Trade Deal With China -- What It Means
“Tomorrow (June 29), Taiwan will sign a game-changing free trade agreement with China that finally lets it play in the dynamic ring of fiery growth that has typified East Asia for the past decade but has threatened to relegate the isolated island to damp kindling unable to keep its own spark going. But despite fears in Taiwan that led tens of thousands to protest in Taipei over the weekend that the agreement is yet one more step toward eventual assimilation into the Chinese mainland, there is little to fear. Free trade will instead help Taiwan strengthen its own economy and put it into a stronger position vis-à-vis China,” says Asia Society Associate Fellow Sheridan Prasso.
